Hi friends and welcome!
I am buzzing with excitement to share my first post at Therapeutic Writers on Substack. 🥳 Thank you so much for being here, and a special thanks to those of you who already upgraded!
This is an update of the weekend post from Letters from Therapy, with more details about what I plan to write and what’s coming soon.
I will usually post once a week, midweek, but this week there are two extra posts to introduce Therapeutic Writers on Substack properly.
Do you write to help others with mental health, personal growth and wellbeing? Introduce yourself and your publication in the comments!
I’m Kate, a psychotherapist-turned-writer, a fifty year old mum to a 19 year old, dog lover and jewellery designer. For 15 months I have posted every week on the Substack rollercoaster. When I started I had no clue about Substack, which felt overwhelming - was it the same for you? I felt intimidated as the new girl in town and was full of questions like:
Would people subscribe?
How could I make my posts resonate?
How often should I post?
What if I loose interest or burnout?
Is it better to use a writing formula or follow my creative flow?
How should I maintain boundaries?
How much theory shall I share?
Do I need a brand?
What can I disclose? (not something we do in the therapy room).
Hasn’t this already been written about?
Why does my nose look so big in photos?
I’ve learned a lot posting more than 100 times here. Letters from Therapy now has 2300 subscribers and provides me a much needed income stream.
I discovered structures that make my writing sing better, and how to flow. I found a balance between self-disclosure and privacy. I can tolerate cringe. I learned easy ways to record audio and video. My childlike insecurities fell away as my confidence and support network here grew. I stopped checking my stats all the time. I found my voice!
I am working my way up to bestseller status (the holy grail), which is in sight, driven by my whirling aspirations to earn an income from writing on Substack.
Our therapeutic writing has the power to heal and change peoples lives, so let’s make it shine!
I’m not an expert writer or teacher (let me stress that!) but I have been on a wonderful journey on Substack, learned a ton, like how to write therapeutic content that has helped and resonated with my paid community.
What I’ll Write About
I am writing for anyone writing on Substack to help others with mental health, personal growth and well-being. I want to cover topics like:
How I write content that resonates, shifts and heals.
My experience of being a therapeutic Substack writer. Shaping a therapeutic publication.
Behind the scenes, growth, going viral, plateauing, stats, lessons learned.
Writing tools, tips, and resources, that make writing life smoother.
Looking after our own mental health as healers who write.
Dealing with conflicts like self disclosure, boundaries, or difficult readers.
A community space in the comments to grow, connect, support each other and enjoy our writing journeys.
And…
A monthly community themed post thread to connect and make friends. I thought this would be a fun way to share our quirks, nuances and gifts.
Guest posts from successful therapeutic writers on Substack.
3-4 midweek posts a month.
The greatest value will be behind a paywall, useful content that’s too vulnerable, revealing or high value to give away (boundaries!) Upgrade to get it all, and to support me and this community.
I am honoured that many of you have already upgraded, thank you and welcome! 🥰
Posts coming soon:
A post tomorrow about my journey here, and soon: The highly sensitive therapeutic writer; why going viral isn’t all it’s cracked up to be; using Ikagai to clarify your Substack, how I structure my posts and plenty more!
Enough about me! Tell us about yourself and your publication in the comments. Share your latest post if you like, and let’s go and explore all this beautiful writing!
With love and gratitude,
Kate
P.S. Please restack, like and comment to help grow our community!💜
Tell us about yourself and your publication. What is your latest post? This is mine of course, my first one here!
Hey I’m Sam and I run a holistic wellness sanctuary called SoulFull, in Holmfirth which is in the Holme Valley in Huddersfield 🤍
My Substack is called Healing Starts from Within and aims to help people recognise their bodies innate ability to self heal through exploration and reflection using my own personal experiences as examples. It’s in its infancy and there is loads I would like to write about more consistently but I’m juggling it with opening a new treatment space to expand my business, raising 2 teenagers and 2 dogs 😂 so life is busy but amazing. I’m also navigating the living grief of having a mum with advanced dementia in my mid 40’s which was unexpected. Some days are better than others but I’ve found being surrounded by supportive communities like Substack and having a creative outlet to help with this particular type of grief really helpful. I’m really grateful for and excited by this new publication thanks so much for providing this space x
