Hi friends

Is Substack is too saturated with therapeutic writers?

When I started my Substack Letters from Therapy in January 2024 I thought it would be a great space to share the material I had already created for an online course. I had a small mailing list of about 150 subscribers (today it’s 2570). I planned to cut and paste each of the therapeutic lessons I had written and schedule them out each week.

When I first explored Substack, I discovered countless high-quality writers in the mental health and personal growth fields I hadn’t been aware of. Gulp!

I stopped typing. Did you have this experience too?

Not only that, many people who are not trained professionals are sharing their experiences of mental health and personal growth too, which of course is wonderful, building a community around themselves.

However, with my chest a little tighter, I wondered how on earth would there be any space for a new account like mine? Yet another mental health newsletter - what would be the point?

The weight of despondency weighed down on me. Therapists, coaches, psychologists and other therapeutic writers are all crammed into the same niche, fighting for space. Is that how it is?

The recent hounding of Glennon Doyle off of Substack shows how threatened others can feel, not that that’s an excuse for bullying (process your material people! You would think people writing in our field would be more enlightened). Those of us that did not get involved in the pitchfork waving frenzy may have deeper roots of understanding of humans and society than many. We can be glad of the work we have done on ourselves! And so can our readers.
